Thrifting in the footsteps of Elvis

If you are ever in Memphis and looking for a thrifting adventure, you must take a ride down Winchester Road. Winchester, convienently located near the Memphis airport, is one of those lowbrow destinations best known for Strip Clubs and Pay day loans.It does also have quite a few thrift stores and is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.If you leave the airport and head east on Winchester, you will definitely hit Disabled American Vets,Memphis Super Thrift,and Thrift Town. Today's post is about Thrift Town.

Thrift Town is furthest from the Airport, heading towards Collierville. The address is 6646 Winchester Road.Thrift town has specials on tags and a great selection and variety of household goods, such as vintage luggage and dishes. They also have some interesting vintage fabric and old quilt bits.They have a wide variety of vintage and antique books and records. The clothes are very much picked over and not worth the visit as is the linens department so dont bother if that is your thing.A few nice coats but the trashionistas have definitely picked this store over as far as clothing goes.

Truly Thrifting in Oblivion

I am back in the Mississippi Delta Again. Not so much for fun or pleasure. My dear Aunt Alice has been diagnosed with something Not So Good. And it is bringing on the blues.
She has left for treatment up in Yankee territory, which is good. So to quell myself, well, it's time for some thrifting. I am heading to the healing waters of the hot springs and on my way I'll send a dispatch or two...

Thrifting down de bayou cher

I got into my piroux cher to go meet my friend Snookie Faucheaux and check out de bargins in Boutte.
The first stop was de family Thrift Center in Westwego, 6620 Highway 90 West.This place has three racks of 25 cent specials and tag sales that change daily. Bring de cash because they dont take no plastic or checks der. There were a few lovely vintage slips and they do have interesting collectible china if you like that sort of thing. Sometimes they have nice fabric but not this time. Dey aint open on Sunday neither, but 10-6 Monday thru Sat.




the next stop on down the road about 15 miles was the lovely town of Boutte or is it Luling? St. Charles Parish has a store called the "social concerns." This here is Snookie Country so drive slow and stop often for de sausage oooweee. Keep driving down Highway 90 West til you hit the new Walgreens and Paul Mallard Drive. Take a right at the Snookie signs and head down one mile thru de bayou. Get there early, social concerns closed prompty at 3:45pm. Shop here for old records, books, silver, silverplate and some supersweet furniture. No clothes - they are pretty picked over.I did see a vintage Schwinn that was royal blue and in perfect condition.

Casa Verde ... preparing for hurricane season

Casa Verde has been preparing for hurricane season and keeping a wary eye on this tropical disturbance in the gulf Bob Breck keeps telling us about. Sense and sensibility keeps saying well it has been very cool lately, the coolest summer in a while and so the gulf isnt too hot and it wont create something terrible, but that doesnt make it any less nervewracking for us all.

I've created a little bit of a personal (family) escape plan and it goes something like this:

#1 is pet carriers. With a dog, 2 unwieldy cats, 2 kittens and 2 iguanas that all have to be kept *apart* you cannot underestimate carriers. Strong ones that Estelle cannot break out of.
#2 pet "downers" or baby benedryl.we have a cat named "cry baby." enough said
#3 big big gas can maybe 2, just incase
#4 battery chargers, batteries, lanterns
#5 bug spray. organic, for all of us creatures
#6 mommy downers. I'm going to the doctor this week to get some. The anxiety of hurricane season is driving me nuts
#7 wood for the windows - done, thanks to heather!
#8 attic survival kit with hatchet, food for pets and people, water, toiletries and the house title and insurance policy!
#9 car survival kit - ready at all times with the red cross survival kit from emily
